The United Kingdom (UK) government governed by the Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Labour Party made a harsh announcement yesterday about the waiting time of 10 years for the Private Renters’ to live in a decent home.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government made it public that the Decent Homes Standard will be applied to Private Rented Homes from 2035.
There are close to 4.4 Million Private Renters’ in England.
Renters’ pain and anguish has surpassed their patience given the endless timeline adopted by the UK government to provide them their right to live peacefully and without continuing harassment by greedy and errant Landlords.
Landlords greed in the UK is insatiable as they have time and again failed to provide decent homes to renters’ in exchange of ongoing surging rent.
The UK government has given 10 years of leeway to the Landlords to make their homes decent and liveable at the cost of Renters' continuing and never ending mental agony and sufferings.
As per the English Housing Survey, more than one in five rented homes in England are currently ‘non decent’.
Decent Homes Standard
To meet the Decent Homes Standard, a home must be free from serious health and safety hazards, be in a reasonable state of repairs, have reasonably modern facilities and services such as kitchens and bathrooms and provide a reasonable degree of heating comfort.
It was first implemented in the social housing sector in 2021, while the standard was last updated in 2006.
The revised Decent Homes Standard, when applied in 2035, will also include a new criteria related to the absence of damp and mould.

At present, 3.6 Million Private Renters’ are living with damp and mould in their homes.
